The site is located in Makande, a mix of residential and commercial areas at the entry to Mombasa island from the Nairobi -Mombasa highway. Intensive analysis was carried out to establish the best use of land. The development is comprised of a hotel, offices and lettablel shop space while also availing space for a restaurant and food courts, conference facilities, outdoor terrace, gym and pool and ample parking.
The building’s facade detailing features a strong hexagonal presence which also informs the development’s organizational principles. The hexagon is prevalent throughout nature and widely accepted as a symbol of harmony and balance. Perfectly symmetrical from all sides, structurally enabling the equal distribution of loads and stresses resulting in one of the world’s strongest structures.
Tafari embraces a holistic approach to environmental responsibility and resource efficiency, both in its construction and operational phases. It prioritizes natural ventilation strategies, reducing reliance on energy-intensive air conditioning systems, and optimizes resource use with occupancy sensors controlling lighting and climate. Rainwater harvesting serves various functions, from cleaning to toilet flushing and nurturing the surrounding landscape. Wastewater management is enhanced through a treatment plant and sanitary fittings with infra-red flushing mechanisms. The choice of materials focuses on those with lower embodied energy and minimal maintenance requirements, minimizing environmental impact while ensuring longevity. Furthermore, Tafari's commitment to sustainability extends to preserving up to 60% of the existing mature trees, demonstrating a harmonious coexistence with nature..
